Back in January, the Contractor and I wanted my Mother to make us some comfort food. She offered to make her usual Chicken Parmesan, chef salad, etc., but we wanted something different. We brought up a particular meal that she hadn’t made since November of 1971. Now, this meal might sound like something basic for most people, but for numerous reasons, my Mother hadn’t made this particular dish for nearly 5 decades.
The dish we were pushing her to make were non-other than the delicious, tasty, amazing SLOPPY JOES! We had a craving for some sloppy joes and nothing else would suffice! My Mother didn’t know where to begin, so she started looking up recipes online and found a recipe on The Pioneer Woman’s website that sounded PERFECT. We used the recipe below as a foundation for our sloppy joes:
- 2 Tablespoons Butter
- 2-1/2 pounds Ground Beef
- 1/2 whole Large Onion, Diced
- 1 whole Large Green Bell Pepper, Diced
- 5 cloves Garlic, Minced
- 1-1/2 cup Ketchup
- 1 cup Water
- 2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
- 2 teaspoons Chili Powder (To Taste)
- 1 teaspoon Dry Mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (To Taste)
- Worcestershire Sauce, To Taste
- 2 Tablespoons Tomato Paste (optional)
- Tabasco Sauce (optional; To Taste)
- Salt To Taste
- Freshly Ground Black Pepper (To Taste)
- Kaiser Rolls
We took the Pioneer Woman’s recipe, removed the tomato paste, tabasco sauce and black pepper. Then we increased the brown sugar from 2 tablespoons to 2ish cups – each time we increase/decrease based on taste. This recipe has become our ultimate comfort food – sloppy joes!! It is OH SO GOOD!!
My Mama and I had SO much fun cooking and had even more fun eating! We made the sloppy joes, pirogies and a side salad the other night for dinner. I wish that there was such thing as smell-o-vision so that you could experience just how good these were!
Any helpful tips and tricks that you could share with us for sloppy joes? What are some of your favorite comfort foods? Please share below! Any that you would like my Mama and I to try out? Please share the recipe and I will try and share on the blog!
That’s it for now
